Last Saturday, Rover’s travelling faithful were finally celebrating their team’s first win of the season at Torquay.
Rovers enjoyed a good deal of possession but were seemingly undone with two goals both against the run of play, which left Gasheads fuming. With the match being played out and looking like a home win, Rovers struck back with two late goals from Junior Agogo, the second a competitor for goal of the month if not goal of the season, and a classy top corner last minute winner from substitute Richard Walker.
As an added bonus(?), fans Associate Director Kim Stuckey joined the Radio Bristol commentary team as summariser. He came across very well and gave us all a good laugh at the end with the line “Helen Chamberlain, Basil Fawlty, your boys took one hell of a beating” like the Norwegian commentator all those years ago when England went down to Norway.
Sadly, this week has seen us go out of the Carling Cup at Millwall despite a brave fight by the team, so its back to concentrating on the league for now.

It still seems strange to many that we are playing football in August, while test cricket is still being played. With the way the fixture list panned out this season, not to mention holidays, some Gasheads including myself, have yet to see a game this term. The postponement of the Oxford game, scheduled for this coming Tuesday evening means I won’t get to see my first home game until 10th September. I imagine the league will be starting to take some sort of shape by then, but the early signs are that our away point against Barnet on the opening day could yet prove to be a very good point for us.

In the meantime Supporters Club activities continue to keep us busy. Volunteers are still needed to help on a match day, in addition to those we already have, so if you can spare the time to get involved, please contact either of the Supporters Shops, 199 or Pirate Leisure, or the portakabin behind the Bass terrace on a match day.
Pink shirts are still being distributed, though there are some still waiting to be collected.
The Supporters Club’s music quiz held last week was well attended, with eight teams taking part. As a result of feedback received from those attending, the Social committee are currently planning a films and TV quiz, coming soon. Watch this space for more details. Another date for your diaries is 13th of October, the date provisionally booked for Phil Draper’s ever-popular music quiz. Normal start time is 7.30 and it is held in the Bristol room at the Mem. I will confirm this nearer the time.
During the close season, the website, bristolroverssc.co.uk, has undergone a lot of maintenance and had some small facelifts made to it. It is now possible to get information for Gasheads on there much more quickly than last season, and it continues to grow and improve. Judging by the statistics for visitors it is doing a good job, with very good hit rates per month. Surprisingly, during the close season the hit rate did not drop and along with UK based Gasheads reading it we have an army of regular readers from various countries across the globe.
Lets hope for a successful away day again this week.
